Bill Hayton, author of “Vietnam: Rising Dragon,” replies…

In response to my recent post on two friends’ responses to the New York Review of Books review on Bill Hayton’s recently published Vietnam: Rising Dragon, Bill Hayton himself writes,

Hi, I just came across this blog, I hope you find the book interesting. On the points mentioned above….

6.7 million security agents. The figure is taken from Carl Thayer’s work, possibly the most knowledgeable foreigner on earth about Vietnam’s security forces. The total comes from adding up all military and police personnel plus the neighbourhood wardens and members of voluntary militia in rural areas who answer to the Ministry of Public Security or the military.

Access to Amnesty International websites. Access may come and go at different times but right now access to the BBC Vietnamese Service site is blocked by some ISPs and we all know about the semi-blocking of Facebook.

I hope people take the trouble to read the book, rather than just the reviews!
Best wishes
Bill Hayton

Thank you, Mr. Hayton, for writing. My book is on the way. I hope you all will read it too and let me know what you think.
